Interactive Soundscapes in the heart of Brisbane

Bringing the natural world to a bustling city

Picture yourself strolling along the river in central Brisbane, when suddenly, the sounds native birds spring to life, seemingly flying right beside you as you walk. This permanent soundscape installation was designed to augment the natural soundscape of the surrounding area, highlighting various bird species indigenous to Brisbane.

Interactivity

As walkers pass the installation, they trigger one of two photoelectric triggers hidden in the boardwalk. Depending on the direction of the visitor, various soundscapes are then played that follow the direction of the visitor, adding realistic auditory movement to their visit. The result is a subtle yet intriguing moment or two as visitors turn to see where the birds are coming from, listening keenly as they fly around you.

Robust by design

Sound Environment worked closely with the local council to integrate this soundscape into the existing boardwalk. We custom designed fully submersible speakers that are able to operate under incredibly harsh conditions. The installation works 24/7 and is completely autonomous.
